Lew Wallace Study Preservation Society

The Lew Wallace Study Preservation Society was formed in 1997 to assist with preservation efforts for the Lew Wallace Study and promote an appreciation of Wallace history. It works closely with the Crawfordsville Parks and Recreation department, which owns and operates the museum on behalf of the city. With over 100 members, the Society is growing and membership dues provide for the preservation and development of the site. The following is a sample of some of the Society’s important projects:
  • Restore the Carriage House for use as an interpretive center, gift shop, and meeting space.
  • Repair the back porch and seal the basement underneath it. The basement currently houses many of our artifacts and collectibles, and is far from being waterproof.
  • Cultivate outdoor exhibits including the planting of flowers from General Wallace's time, the designation of the grave of Old John (General Wallace's favorite horse), and the excavation of the original moat and reflecting pool.
  • Develop an arboretum with signage.
  • Clean and preserve the Wallace statue and front gate, and repair the wall around the grounds.
  • Expand our education programs to include discovery kits for use in our school systems that incorporate high academic standards, artists on site, archaeology, nature programming and candlelight tours.
  • Hold an annual Lew Wallace Festival to celebrate the accomplishments of this intelligent, well-loved, successful man.
  • Not only do members have the satisfaction of supporting this National Historic Landmark, but membership also comes with benefits!
